Which level is right for me?
The computer opponents are based on the Stockfish chess engine, with its playing strength scaled down. As a rule of thumb: if you are just starting, choose a low level. Once you win there regularly, move up one level. On the high levels you are seriously challenged and have to play accurately not to lose.
Why play against the computer?
- Always available: no waiting for an opponent, and you can practise on your phone too.
- Practise without pressure: try new openings or train endgames without a rating at stake.
- Learn from mistakes: after the game you can see exactly where the decisive errors happened.
- Build confidence: early wins on low levels help before you face real players.
Tips for beginners
- Develop your pieces: bring knights and bishops into the game early and castle in time so your king is safe.
- Fight for the centre: pawns and pieces in the centre give you more space and mobility.
- Check threats before every move: which piece is the computer attacking? Is one of your pieces undefended?
- Know the piece values: pawn 1, knight and bishop 3 each, rook 5, queen 9. Do not trade blindly – look at the whole picture.
- Take your time: against the computer there is no need to rush.
